Why your photos come out soft — and how to fix it
Nine times out of ten it is not the printer. It is the file that arrived.
WhatsApp shrinks your photos unless you tell it not to
Sending a photo as a Photo makes WhatsApp compress it hard — often down to a tenth of its size. That is fine on a screen and visible immediately on paper. Send it as a Document instead: same photo, original quality, no compression. You can also use the upload box on our home page, which never re-compresses.
How many pixels each size needs
At 300 dots per inch — the usual standard for a crisp print — a 10 × 15 cm print needs about 1180 × 1770 pixels, A4 needs about 2480 × 3508, and an 80 × 120 cm canvas would need roughly 9450 × 14175, which no phone makes. That last number is why large canvas is looked at from further away: send the biggest original you have and we will tell you honestly how it will look before printing.
Never send a screenshot of a photo
A screenshot is your screen, not your photograph. It arrives smaller, cropped to the shape of a phone, and with the phone's own user interface in it if you were not careful. Send the original from your gallery — the file the camera wrote.
Real photographs of old prints are better than nothing
If the only copy of a photograph is a print from thirty years ago, photograph it in daylight, straight on, filling the frame, with no shadow from your hand. We can print from that. It will never be as sharp as the original negative would have been, and we will tell you what to expect.
What we can and cannot fix
We can correct brightness, contrast and colour a little. We cannot invent detail that is not in the file, and we will not pretend otherwise — if a photo will come out soft at the size you want, we would rather tell you before printing than after.
